Highlighted Point: Positive parent-child relationship is vital for the overall development of a child. By being in the moment, spending quality time and showing warmth, you can strengthen your relationship with your child.

Parenting is the most fulfilling job but full of challenges. In this modern era, family life has become stressful with many pressures. Ultimately, parents want what is the best for their child and a strong parent-child relationship can help lead to better outcomes for children.

What makes a good parent?

Parents strive to make decisions in the best interest of the child.

A good parent does not mean perfection, no one is perfect.

No child is perfect either... understands and keeps this reality in mind when you set your expectations.

But that does not mean that we should not work towards that goal.

Set high standards for yourself first and then for your children. Parents need to be role models for their children.

Importance of a Positive-child relationship

The parent-child bonding is one that nurtures the physical, emotional and social growth of the child. This is a unique bond and it lays the foundation for the child’s personality, life choices, and overall behaviour.

Here are some tips to help with strengthening your relationship with your children:

  • Of course, you love your children but tell them every day, no matter what age they are. Even in tough times let your kid know you did not like the behaviour but you love them unconditionally.
  • Kids develop various skills through the power of play. Also, playing with your kid and having fun together help you develop your relationship with your children; it can help children’s language skills, emotions, social skills, and creativity.
  • Get some time from your busy schedule and talk to your child without any distraction, even 10 minutes a day can make a big difference in good communication habits.
  • Every strong connection starts with listening. Try to see things from your child’s perspective and foster mutual respect.
  • If you have more than once child, it is better to spend individual time with each of them. Quality and individual time with your child will strengthen your bond, builds their self-esteem and lets them know they are valued.
  • Telling stories or reading bedtime books to children can create lifelong rituals. Bedtime may also be the only time working parents share with their kids so try and make it calm and enjoyable.
  • Teach your kids about your faith. Tell them what you believe and why. Also, let them ask a question and answer them honestly.
  • Sometimes, we miss out on opportunities or closeness by not allowing children to help us with various tasks. Let them help you, children feel powerful when they help.
  • Eating together sets the stage for conversation and sharing. Turn the TV off, and do not rush through a meal.
  • Your children need to know that you believe they are a priority in your life. Children are able to observe excessive stress and notice when they feel you are not paying them attention.
  • Finally, set up some firm but fair family rules. Rules are clear statements about your family wants to look after and treat its members. They can help your children trust that you will consistent in the way you treat her.

This is all about good parenting. Keep it in mind that there is no formula for getting your parent-child relationship right and there will be times when it is hard to relate to your child the way you want to. But if you keep working on improving your relationship over time, your child will feel loved and valued.
